About Hatha Yoga

Ku-ring-gai Yoga School is a Pymble-based studio offering Hatha Yoga classes, meditation, workshops and retreats for all levels.

Hatha Yoga is a foundational branch of yoga that uses physical postures (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama), and meditation to align, strengthen and balance the body and mind.

The Sanskrit word hatha literally translates to “force” or “determined effort”, and is also commonly interpreted as a combination of ha (sun) and tha (moon), symbolising the unification and balance of opposing energies (such as active and receptive, or hot and cool).

Today, “Hatha” is used as a broad, generic term to describe yoga classes that focus heavily on physical postures alongside breathwork and a mindful focus – and it’s at the core of what we do at Ku-ring-gai Yoga School.

What to Expect in a Hatha Class
  • Paced for Everyone: Unlike dynamic, fast-paced styles (like Vinyasa or Power Yoga), Hatha classes are usually slower and gentler, making them accessible for beginners and advanced students alike.
  • Static Holds: Instead of continuously flowing from one pose directly into the next, Hatha classes involve moving into a posture, holding it for several breaths, then taking a brief pause before the next pose.
  • Alignment and Mindfulness: The slower tempo gives students the time to focus on body alignment and finding a balance between effort and ease in every pose.
The Core Components

The physical components are designed to prepare the body for deep meditation and relaxation.

  • Asanas (Postures): Physical movements designed to build flexibility, increase strength, and release tension.
  • Pranayama (Breathwork): Controlled breathing exercises used to calm the mind and manage the body’s vital life-force energy (prana).
  • Meditation (Dhyana) & Relaxation: A period of quiet reflection and stillness, often ending the practice in Corpse Pose (Savasana).

The primary goal of the practice is stabilising the mind, building physical vitality, and cultivating a deep, conscious awareness.

Move. Breathe. Belong.
